I don’t always get a chance to watch AMC’s The Walking Dead immediately after it airs. Sunday is a crap night for me and sometimes it sits a few days before I get to it, which is why I haven’t done a review blog for it up until this point. However, with just watching the most recent episode “Chupacabra” I can’t keep this rage inside any longer.
Somehow, a show, that in my opinion helped revive a genre, is tanking before my very eyes, and there isn’t anything I can do but watch.
Where to start?! Oh I know, Sophia better be fucking dead. If that was my kid and I found her in an alive, non-zombie state, I would beat the shit out of her. She’s 12, the woods are disorienting, I get it. But that bitch has been gone for like three episodes now. I know there are a lot of woods but WTF, you didn’t pick up any survival camping shit during your stint on the road?!
One of the things I loved best about Season 1 was how fast paced it was. The writing was quick, the Walkers were quicker, and it helped the show to stand out. I loved the idea of a Zombie Apocalypse taking place in a world where “zombies” were unheard of. It was the best move the writers could have ever made. Granted if tomorrow I woke up to a Zombified world, I’d still shit my pants, but I would have some knowledge, some idea of how to handle it. The thought that to these people this threat is NEW and unheard of added immensely to how frightening it was. Ignorance breeds fear, and so it was brilliant.
I’ve watched that writing slip away. The show has gotten sloppy and painful predictable…and I mean painfully. We have never thoroughly gone through the original survivors backgrounds, and yet they keep adding more people. I swear to God I pay attention but I don’t recall seeing two of the survivors before this past episode on the farm. WTF?! I would think it was just me except two others have said they didn’t recall them either.
Onward with the painful predictability. Shane letting Otis die? Called it in the first 2 minutes of that episode. Shane was changing his appearance frantically, clearly trying to disassociate himself from himself. It’s psych 101 and that’s how I knew….he let Otis die. Barn Zombies? Called that shit two episodes ago, stating my theory when they were told to stay away from the barn, and again when the Doctor told them he wanted to handle the Walkers. The Doctor immediately struck me as a fanatic, most likely with deep seeded religious roots and in my prediction is he has been locking up his friends and neighbors hoping God will hop in and a cure will be found. It’s a commandment ya know…don’t kill.
And can I give a big WHAT THE FUCK to Lori!!! Getting pregnant? REALLY?! Bitch you better hurl your ass down some stairs like yesterday. What the hell are you going to do? Are you going to fasten a bulletproof vest into a baby bjorn???
Andrea needs to pull her shit together. I get that she has been through a lot. Killing my zombie sister would seriously fuck me up too, but she is essentially acting like a bratty kid whose ipod was taken away. There is a bigger picture here, and living people you supposedly care about. GROW UP.
Also this is just a personal issue of mine. Who did Lauren Cohan (Maggie) blow to get so many gigs. I’m sorry but I cannot stand her as an actress. First, I had to suffer through her as Bela on Supernatural for like two Seasons. Then she invaded my Vampire Diaries as needy Rose. Please just stop being in my shit. In addition, she is nothing without the British accent she used in both SPN and TVD.
Aside from the overall lack of story development, am I also the only one who feels like the make-up and effects are less than stellar so far? They were literally awe inspiring last season. This season they have been subpar at best. (With the exception of the bloater Walker in the well, that was pretty cool.)
Ok, I guess that satisfied my bitching quota for this season….so far. Despite what you may now think, there are a few things I have to give props to.
Two actors really stand out this season. Daryl is phenomenal; he started out as one of the least likeable characters yet has evolved into my favorite. He is one of the only characters that have shown any type of character evolution and growth. He has proven himself as trustworthy and among all things loyal. I love that he ended up saving T-Dog’s life a few episodes back. Starting out being a racist prick, it showed that he had let that crap go. Sure, it’s still there, people never change entirely, but he is learning and adapting. I have always liked Norman Reedus, but his acting makes Daryl who he is. Keep pulling your weight; hopefully soon you won’t be carrying the world on your back.
I have to give a shout out to Jon Bernthal who plays Shane. That poor bastard acts the shit out of every scene he is in. You feel his frantic desire to please, his frustration and conflict that Rick is alive and with his family. His acting makes me want to hug/thump him. Keep at it friend, you’re kicking ass out there.
Essentially, I want the old Walking Dead back. When the makeup made you pause and look extra close, when you could feel the desperation of the survivors, when you never knew what was going to be around the corner, when Rick had more than 2 lines an episode.
Dear AMC…please fix it, because a few more episodes of this and many people are going to pronounce The Walking Dead fully deceased.
