Ian Somerhalder plays Damon Salvatore, at first the “bad” Salvatore Vampire brother, now attempting to be the “good” Salvatore brother this season. I have to be honest that I have been a fan of Somerhalder since his Lost days. He has this amazing ability to make you feel his emotions. When he falls off the wagon, or is trying to care for others, you can feel his inner struggle. Who can’t relate to the notion of being who you are vs. being who you think you should be?
Paul Wesley plays Stefan Salvatore, a Vampire who has seriously gone off the rails this season. I always liked Wesley, don’t get me wrong, but he has definitely shined this season more than the others. He has played his part well, being the perfect boyfriend and friend. To be honest his perfection was more unbelievable than him being a vampire. Now he is struggling and fighting to survive and not harm those he loves. I was so happy to see him finally get a juicy storyline; I hope it continues through the season.
The supporting cast has matured as well, especially newbie Vampire Caroline(played by Candice Accola). I won’t sugarcoat it, human Caroline annoyed the crap out of me. She was neurotic and needy, and was possibly my least favorite character on the show. However with her new thirst for blood came her amazing personal transformation. Instead of being a needy doormat, I’d go as far as to say she has become a role model for everyone watching the show. She has proven her ability to adapt and make her Vampire world as similar to her human world as possible. She is constantly loyal to her friends and has the guts to speak the truth when she thinks it needs said. I would have to say as much as I love Nina’s characters, if I could be anyone it would be Caroline.
Also matured (and gotten increasingly hotter by the second) is Elena’s brother Jeremy Gilbert (played by Steven McQueen) At the beginning of the series, Jeremy had lost his way into all the vices he could find after the death of his parents. Upon finding out about the supernatural world, he didn’t realize he was living in, he spent most of last season growing up, which I personally loved because Elena’s character really needed someone human she could lean on. And that’s what siblings are great for, they help you remember where you started.
I would have to say, my very favorite human is Alaric Saltzman (played by Matthew Davis) He literally was dragged into this mystical world kicking and screaming. I wish he were given better storylines because I think he is an awesome actor and doesn’t deserve to be in the background so much. I especially love the scenes between him and the Gilbert siblings. He has accidentally found himself in a father figure position with both of them, and he trying his best to keep them both safe. I also can’t get enough of his bromance with Damon. He has a heart of gold, and a smile that melts my heart, please keep your ring on buddy, I can’t lose you!
Aside from the cast, the storylines are brilliantly written. What I love about this show especially is that the entire group talks to one another. There are few secrets between them, because they all know they are stronger together. They also have cell phones AND THEY USE THEM! They have their own personal phone tree and I love it. It makes the storylines more realistic and move at a faster pace.
I could name a million more reasons to make Mystic Falls the place to be on Thursday nights, but I won’t. Watch one episode for yourself and you’ll be hooked!
